IMEC completes process cooling system for Dirats Laboratories. Reduces company’s energy costs by $47,000 per year.
May 2010
IMEC has announced the completion of a cooling process system for Dirats Laboratories, a materials testing company in Westfield, MA. The new high-efficiency system accomplishes Dirats Labs goals and much more, according to company president Eric Dirats, “It was instantly apparent that IMEC had a level of experience and expertise that was far more sophisticated than typical process cooling contractors. These guys are smart. Their design solution was intelligent and effective, with brilliant simplicity.”
IMEC’s engineering team conceived an automated system to provide cooling for hydraulic power supplies, heat pumps, air compressors, and chillers. Piping was reconfigured to capture the heat rejected from the hydraulics for the heat pump loop. The single cooling system employs a closed circuit evaporative cooling tower with a duplex pumping skid.
Primary benefits of the system:
- Simplified and reliable operation. The system totally automated to simplify operation and provide stable and reliable temperature control. The evaporative spray pump and VSD cooling fan is thermostatically controlled and the system is designed to provide maximum cooling water feed temperature. A three-way control valve automatically by-passes the cooling tower in cold weather to prevent heat loss and stabilize the loop temperature.
- Reduced energy cost. Utilizing an efficient centralized system and reclaiming the heat rejected from the heat pumps yields substantial energy savings in both the heating and cooling modes, with estimated total savings of $47,000.00 annually.
- Reduced maintenance. A closed circuit system employs a Propylene Glycol loop to eliminate the possibility of freezing. Due to the inherent cleanliness of the closed circuit system, an additional benefit is the elimination of all heat exchanger maintenance
- Reliability. The system is designed to be totally automated and incorporates duplex pumps to provide automatic integrated backup and fail-safe operation. The mounted and wired control panel serves as a load center with individual circuit breakers and starters for each motor. The panel requires one (1) feed line for the entire system and includes complete monitoring and alarm annunciation.
- Eliminated City water and Well water usage. Water usage was reduced by eliminating outdated an Heat Treat oven and some of the Hydraulics.
